January 21, 2018 - Hebrews: Faith Anchored In Truth (Pastor Dave Barber)

Jesus made a perfect world for us at creation, a creation that we were meant to rule and manage. But we chose sin, and invited Satan to begin to corrupt the Lord's perfect world. Jesus could have left us alone or destroyed us, but he decided to redeem His world through the incarnation. The author of Hebrews shows us the awesome wonder of our Restorer.

Pay close attention to your relationship with Jesus or you will drift away.   Chapter one has no command, but chapter two starts with one. Drifting is a result of our sinful nature, all of us have a natural bent toward serving ourselves. That means that there is really no such thing as coasting. You are either focused on Christ or you are drifting to the sea of regret. This week we look at this challenge along with a few helps for understanding the Bible.

There is always pressure to make Jesus lower than He is. In Hebrews chapter 1, the author is making it clear that Jesus is supremely over the angels. In this message, we will look at the name of Jesus, the throne of Jesus, and the worship He receives from the angels. In the end Jesus has at his disposal myriads of angels who are servants sent out to minister to believers.

December 31, 2017 - His Glory (Neil Wilson)

We long to be blessed and we were wired to bless. It's part of being made in the image of God. When we speak and deliver good into other people's live we are blessing them and fulfilling a significant part of our purpose. Numbers 6:24-26 helps us see God's blessing in our past and His faithfulness into the future.

December 24, 2017 - His Glory (Pastor Dave Barber)

This week we took a look at Hebrews 1:1-3. Jesus is "the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature." God spoke to us through his son, Jesus. Immanuel (God with us), literally reached down into our lives. There was never a better revelation of God than Jesus.

December 17, 2017 - His Glory (Pastor Dave Barber)

Last week, we looked at the incarnate Jesus before the foundation of the world. This week we look at His glorious return from Matthew 25. His return will be both great and terrible. Great for those who have placed their faith in Christ’s finished work on the cross. It will also be terrible for those who rejected His sacrifice. When Jesus returns He will not come in the vulnerable way He came as a baby. He will come in power with all the angels and He will come to judge the world.

Matthew and Luke share the physical birth of Jesus in the beginning of their gospels. John goes back a lot farther to Jesus' existence before time began. In John 1, he explains who the eternal monogenes (only son) is.  He is life, light, the Word, and he is the Creator... that took on flesh and dwelt among us.

December 03, 2017 - His Glory (Pastor Dave Barber)

This is the first Sunday of the Advent season and we are focusing on God's glory. The glory of God is the beauty of His nature.  When you meet God in any way you see His glory. Glory of His holiness, mercy, love, righteousness etc... When we give glory to God we acknowledge His glorious attributes. Paul encountered God's glory on the road to Damascus. That encounter with God's glory was so significant that he lived the rest of His life for God's glory.

Paul faces a different kind of storm from the wrath he often gets as the Jewish listeners rush him to do him harm. In Acts 27 the storm is a real storm and it leads to a shipwreck. In this message we look at the contrast between facing storms without God verses facing storms with God.

Have you ever wondered if the gospel is for everyday or something you get and then put away for later? Christians never put the gospel away for later. We need it every day. In Acts 26 Pastor Dave explains Paul's calling, his message, and the deep desire of his heart. All of them are about the amazing gospel.

This week we looked at the living sent tool box that Paul uses regularly. The three tools he used in chapter 24 are his testimony, reason, and courage. This message describes those tools that can also be in our own tool boxes for sharing Jesus.

This week we looked at the elders that Paul established as he finished his third missionary journey. We looked at four questions: who calls elders, what is their role, what do they do, and how do they do it?

Who were Apollos, Aquila and Priscilla? They were not apostles yet Aquila and Priscilla started a church in their house, and Apollos was an apologist defending the faith boldly. They either heard the gospel at Jerusalem on the day of pentecost, or people scattered told them the gospel. Either way, they become powerful witnesses of the gospel. In this message we look at the movement of Christianity built up by people like you.

In Acts 17, Paul finds himself in Athens, a city full of idols. In this message we see why Paul's soul was so provoked that it caused him to speak into their lives.  We also see how he spoke into this city with so many false religious ideas.

Jesus told His followers in John 16:33, "You will have tribulation." If we take Jesus at His word, we conclude that we only have two options: be prepared, or be unprepared when tribulation comes. In Acts 16, Paul and Silas demonstrate for us what it means to be prepared when it's 'about midnight' (Acts 16:25).

This week we take a look at Acts chapter 15. We talk through a dispute between Paul and Barnabas. We find that the essence of the gospel isn't grace + the Law, but grace + nothing... a hard concept to grasp.

In Acts chapter 14, Paul and Barnabas finish their first missionary journey. Although we are not all called to be missionaries we are all called to be disciple-makers. In this message, we look at five characteristics of a disciple-maker, and then we look at four things we need to do with new disciples.

Paul and Barnabas were the first missionaries set apart for God's plan to take the gospel to the Gentiles. They were called out of worship. Not just a time of singing, but out of fasting and listening to God with a deep desire to obey whatever the call. It's a good thing too, because the call to be a witness is filled with some fierce persecutions as well as great conversions.

In Acts chapter 12, the pressure gets turned up again on the church. James is killed by Herod, and Peter is thrown in prison waiting to be next, but an angel leads him out of the prison just in time. In this message, we look at the evil plots of our enemy followed by our response of earnest prayers and God's eternal plans.

September 10, 2017 - Living Sent (Pastor Dave Barber)

This week at RVC, we picked back up in our "Living Sent" series through the book of Acts. The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. The believers' lives were so clearly connected to Christ that the local people of Antioch named them Christ followers. That's what Christianos means. This message talks about what we are to be like if we belong to Christ.
